Vivienne Westwood CAFÉ SOCIETY , Paris 1994

Created during a period in which Vivienne Westwood was exploring 19th Century France and particularly Paris, Cafe Society (Spring/Summer 1994) was an extravagant and critically applauded catwalk show. Featuring clothing inspired by the paintings of 17th Century artist Van Dyck, the show also paid homage to the couturier Charles Worth, the British designer who dominated French fashion at the end of the 19th Century.

Huge, 'too big for a normal catwalk' gowns glided across the specially commissioned, one-off leopard print carpet in the ballroom of ‘Le Grand Hotel’ in Paris in front of a star studded audience which included John Paul Gaultier, Michael Hutchence and John Galliano.
